The Monospace Web is a css web design experiment by Oskar Wickström. His expriment started with this tweet and developed into the final form asoutlined here. I was reminded of this episode while reading It’s rude to show AI output to people | Alex Martsinovich.
While Oskar was fleshing out his idea, I had started to experiment with the concept and built my own version of a typewriter styled, text focussed design, and it resulted in - The MonoTyper Manifesto.
I think I took the assistance of ChatGPT or some other LLM, and clearly the outcome is pleasing, though not as complete as Oskar’s version. If you liked either of these versions, you may also want to checkout Terminal CSS - “A modern and minimal CSS framework for terminal lovers”, as they claim. Anyhow, a bit of design inspiration!
Some more links from that thread on monospace themed stuff:
- Oskar’s version uses Jetbrains Mono, mine uses IBM Plex Mono for body, and Syne Mono for the headings.
- The MCSS by Mike Mai — MCSS is a tribute to the British type designer Matthew Carter. The framework is designed with two of Carter’s most commonly known typefaces—Georgia and Verdana. The New Yorker once described Carter as the most widely read man in the world because his typefaces are available as system fonts in most operating systems.

- LaTeX.css — Make your website look like a LaTeX document (I’m not too crazy about this look)
- Kushal Das updated his blog to use OW’s monospace style.
Trying my own variation (the second time): die monospace web
