Interesting critique of Scruton by T.Greer.

My specific critique of Scruton is that he wanted to replace religion with Wagner operas and contemplation of Kant. If your replacement for religion doesn’t work with people who haven’t graduated from high school it doesn’t work at all.

A religion that doesn’t work for everyone isn’t a religion, it’s a mystery cult. (BorgiaKing?)

I don’t think he wanted to replace religion. He didn’t have it, and filled that hole in his soul with the high of culture of the western tradition. But his personal answer could only be replicated for a select few. Healthy cultures provide for the whole.

I think this is a fine criticism of early Scruton, but towards the end of his life his views were rather different, quite traditionally Christian and not terribly high-church at that. Little doubt he was an apostle of high culture, though. (corbinians_bear?)
