Earlier this week OpenAI released updates to the ChaGPT-4o model that were a super hit on the internet kicked off by Grant Slatton’s post showing how GPT is now able to do an excellent rendering of photos into Studio Ghibli style AI Art.
I tried may items as you can see from my timeline, starting with this tweet, followed by this, and this.
4o is capable of doing more than the Studio Ghibli style, of course — Dr Seuss, Angelo Da Fonseca, and Archer, League of Legends, and Frida Kahlo.
But, Studio Ghibli seems to capture the mood and spirit of the people and the moment unlike most models I tried, and I think most people would end up equating this advancement in AI art with “Ghiblification”.
Is AI Art “Art”? Yes. Will AI art make artists make artists obsolete? not anymore than tape-recorders made musicians obsolete or prints made painters obsolete. I would like to think about AI Art as a method of reproduction.
